Mushroom Hunting

Along the foot of West Hill,
prowling damp lowlands, we score
a basket of scarlet hoods and
pinkgill waxcaps, small but tasty,
plus a dozen thick-footed morels.

You seem able to will these
creations out of earth-smell
congealing in your presence.
You know exactly where to brush
the fallen leaves from the brown,
pink, and flesh-colored fungi.

Too bad we find no boletus,
whose meaty under-caps feel
like chicken breasts. Otherwise
a generous haul. The morels
cook quickly. We each devour
a whole one, your little kitchen
clenched and steaming about us.

Upholstered by our intake,
we relax in your cheap plastic chairs.
We shouldn't drink alcohol
with morels, but a single shot
of iced vodka, and we're done,
the kitchen cooling, the earth-smell
delicious as a favorite kiss.

How Little We Deserve The Morning

The first cup moistens lips and throat. The second shatters my
loneliness. The third causes the wrongs of life to fade gently from my
recollection. The fourth purifies my soul. The fifth lifts me to the realms
of the unwinking gods.

Some prefer coffee, thick
as violets in spring, but my preference is
a pot of Assam tea
whose warm breath wafts
around me more like lilies of the valley.

How little we deserve the morning,
yet need its charity of renewal,
beggars, clasping our round bowls of liquid,
holding morning's moisture against the scratchy expanse
             of lengthening day.

My own dry crumbling parts steep, awaken,
tremble a little as if they are the very leaves on the tea bush
responding to wind. I drink the elixir of leaf
and attain some of its flutter.

Watch out, there are plenty of spoilers going around.
